Replacing the SIM card of the Securepoint UTM

Preliminary remark

  • If the SIM card of the UTM is replaced, the associated menu item is hidden as the configuration is linked to the IMEI/IMSI. Replacing the SIM card results in new hardware/interface for the UTM, which must be added again.

  • In order to be able to replace the SIM card of the UTM correctly, a few measures are required
  • These measures differ depending on whether Internet access is provided via an LTE card


Exchange with mobile connection as fallback

Before removing the card

If the LTE Internet access is not actively used (i.e. has no assigned zones and rules), the following steps are necessary before removing the SIM card:

It should be noted what is removed, as this must be restored.
  • If available, delete fallback settings
    Network Network configuration  Area Routing
  • Note routes for the wwan0, if available
    Network Network configuration  Area Network interfaces Button Edit the relevant interface (wwan0), section Fallback
  • Delete the mobile connection or the interface for this after settings have been noted
    Network Network configuration  Area Network interfaces / Mobile

After removing the card

The replacement can now be carried out by performing the following steps:

  • Replacing the SIM card (shutting down the device)
  • Restarting the device
  • Set up mobile connection again

  • Create the deleted interface again, using old zones and activate the option Update associated network objects

  • Reset the noted settings and routes for wwan0 under

Now everything should work as before.



Exchange with actively used mobile connection

Before removing the card

Before removing the LTE card, the following steps must be observed:

  • Note routes for the wwan0, if available

  • If available, note and remove settings such as fallback, DYNDNS etc.

  • Remove this for all created tunnels for which wwan0 is stored
  • Note and remove this for all services that use wwan0, e.g. for IPSec
  • Delete the mobile connection or the interface for this after the settings have been noted

After removing the card

The replacement can now be carried out by performing the following steps:

  • Replacing the SIM card (shutting down the device)
  • Restarting the device
  • Set up mobile connection again

  • Create the deleted interface again, using old zones and activate the option Update associated network objects

  • Reset the noted settings and routes for wwan0 under
  • Add wwan0 to the removed tunnels again under
    Network Network configuration  Area Network interfaces
  • Add wwan0 again for all services that have been noted, e.g. for IPSec
    VPN IPSec
  • The network objects should not have to be taken into account, as 0.0.0.0/0 is preferable to the interface

Now everything should work as before.
